A nurse practitioner at Cincinnati Children's Hospital has come up with a game that she says will make it a lot easier for kids given anesthesia in the operating room.
The app, calledEZ Induction, works by allowing kids to move cartoon animals on a tablet screen by breathing into an anesthesia mask as the controller, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.
The idea is to make kids calm down and focus on the game instead of the scary situation.
"Many children are frightened or scared of the mask, creating an extra layer of stress for the children, parents, and medical staff," saysbby Hess, who worked on the app with the hospital's Innovation Ventures team and the Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation and Start-up Fund.
"The game shifts the focus from something scary to something that's calming and fun," she says.
"It easily engages kids, teaches them to breathe calmly, and lets them know what to expect when they go back to the operating room."
The app will be released later this year.
