A plan to tear down a children's museum in Traverse City, Mich., and replace it with an innovation center has some worried.
The Great Lakes Children's Museum will be razed to make way for the new Freshwater Research and Innovation Center, which is being developed by the nonprofit Freshwater Institute, reports the Traverse City Record-Eagle.
"While such an institution is laudable, the way in which its proponents propose to implement its construction appears to sound a death knell for some already laudable bayfront community assets," writes Jed Mooney in a letter to the editor.
"These organizations depend on shore-side support facilities for their missions," he writes.
"Or a better option: Find a home within, or adjacent to, Northwestern Michigan College's Great Lakes Maritime Academy."
The institute has been in the works for years, and its supporters say the new center will be a place to learn about the Great Lakes.
"But, for such a supposedly valuable project for the future of understanding, protecting and preserving our Great Lakes, as its proponents profess, surely that would be worthy of fundraising to prevent demolishing facilities actively fostering appreciation for the history and environment of the Great Lakes," writes Mooney.
