Haksoon Ahn left his post as executive director of the University of Maryland's Institute for Innovation and Implementation in December.
Now, the school is looking for a new leader, and Ahn is one of four finalists out of more than 20 applicants, the Baltimore Sun reports.
Ahn, who had been with the university since 2001, says he's "thrilled" to be considered for the job, which will require him to make major changes to the way the university does business.
In a post on the institute's website, Ahn says he wants to use his new role to help the university "stay at the forefront of innovation in the fields of child welfare, family and community services, and technology."
Ahn's background includes working with at-risk children, as well as having studied the effects of technology on children in foster care, the Sun notes.
Ahn's other recent achievements include co-authoring a study that found children in out-of-home placements with family members who were "committed to the child's well-being" were more likely to be adopted than those in foster care, the Washington Post reports.
Ahn will be interviewed by a search committee next month.
