A 14-year-old girl in Ireland is being called a "beacon of hope" and a "groundbreaking innovation" after she created an app that helps kids improve their speech.
Dana Carney came up with the idea for TalkTime while using a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program at her high school, reports Gizmodo.
Her inspiration came from a relative who struggled with speech and language therapy, and the app's interactive games helped her 4-year-old daughter, S ? 'ofra, improve her speech, according to a press release.
"The app's impact on S ? 'ofra was particularly profound, boosting her self-confidence and fostering more meaningful social interactions," says the release.
After testing the app with 16 families, 12 of whom reported improvements in their children's speech, Dana says she plans to extend TalkTime to older children and adults with similar speech or language difficulties.
"With long waiting lists being a common barrier, many children are left without the necessary support during crucial developmental stages," says the release.
