The St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment has partnered with LUME Institute of University City to start a program that will allow residents of St. Louis to earn early childhood education certification through apprentice-style learning. This type of training is crucial for seeking jobs in professional child care centers.
Beginners in the program will start out making $9.50 an hour and should make about $13 an hour once they complete all of their training. This hands-on experience will also count for nine hours of college credits.
Currently the program will consist of about 15 single mothers in the Clinton-Peabody housing complex, but if it is successful similar programs will be developed and expanded in other cities like Milwaukee and Detroit.
