"One teacher, one classroom teaching single subjects."
That's just one example of how a school district in Anaheim, Calif., is trying to do away with traditional teaching and replace it with community schools, according to the American Education Association.
The Los Angeles Times reports on the efforts of the Anaheim Union High School District, which is investing more than $4 billion in community schools over the next five years.
The idea is to break down "the figurative walls between teaching and learning in schools and communities," writes American Education's Allison Shelley in a blog post.
"However, as the figurative walls in schooling come down, and teachers must work more closely with industries, agencies, and postsecondary, the lines between those who teach in schools and those who lead them must blur."
To that end, the district has created conditions for teachers to lead without leaving the classroom, according to the Times.
One teacher, Sabina Giakoumis, is a part-teacher/part-5C coach, who is allowed to decide how she spends her time outside of the classroom.
Another teacher created a summer school curriculum that "blew up the bell schedule" and produced "amazing results" for hundreds of the district's most high-need students, according to the American Education
