"So many people who I've seen report being lonely, report not having a place to make connections and to meet people," Robert Rice, a mental health counselor and co-owner of MindFit Mental Health in Rochester, NY, tells the Democrat and Chronicle.
Now he's hoping to change that with the launch of the MindFit Gym, a place where kids can come for supervised video game sessions, social skills classes, and other activities designed to help them manage their mental health, the paper reports.
"By focusing on activities that children naturally gravitate towards, such as video games, MindFit Mental Health aims to engage participants in a meaningful and impactful manner," the gym's website says.
The initial phase of the program, dubbed "Free March," offers free events and classes, the website says, and the hope is that the gym will become a "beacon for mental health innovation," reaching more children and making a lasting difference in their lives.
