A nursery school in the United Arab Emirates is making headlines for its "emotionally supportive" approach to teachingand it's all about building kids' self-esteem, not their academic ability.
At Orchard Nursery in Abu Dhabi, children are encouraged to express themselves through play and are taught how to regulate their emotions, an educator tells Gulf News.
"It's about building children's self-esteem through positive interactions and activities that promote belief themselves," she says.
Orchard is one of a growing number of nurseries in the United Arab Emirates offering this type of teaching, though it's still fairly new there.
In fact, one expert tells Gulf News that "emotionally supportive" teaching has only been around for a few years in the US.
Orchard's approach is based on the idea that a child's emotional well-being is more important than his or her academic ability, and that the more a child is able to manage his or her emotions, the better equipped he or she is to deal with challenging behaviors, such as tantrums.
"By recognizing and adapting to each child's unique needs, educators can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment," says the nursery's manager.
