$2 Million from Province Creates 56 New Childcare Spaces in Nanaimo

"There is an urgent need for high-quality childcare," Keely Freeman, executive director of Nanaimo Innovation Academy, says in a press release.

That's why the Canadian province of British Columbia has allocated $500,000 to build 16 new child-care spaces in Nanaimo.

They're part of a plan to build 56 new child-care spaces across the province over the next three years, the Vancouver Sun reports.

According to the release, BGC Central Vancouver Islandthe only provider of $10-a-day childcare in Nanaimobuilt 40 of the new spaces with $1.5 million in funding from the province.

The other 16 were built with provincial funding.

"Finding safe local childcare can be extremely stressful for families," says British Columbia lawmaker Doug Routley.

"These new childcare spaces will serve our community well."

BGC provides transportation for children at no extra cost, and fees are partially or fully waived for families facing financial hardship.

The press release says the new spaces accommodate children from infants up to 12 years old.

"The space is intentionally designed to spark creativity and imagination in our children, provide a safe and caring environment, and connect children to their community and nature," Freeman says.
